Nao Victoria

The 'Nao Victoria' is a replica of the ship that first sailed around the world. This is the greatest maritime achievement of all time. The original 'Nao Victoria', led by Sebastian Elcano, left Seville in 1519 and returned to the same city in 1522.

This replica was built in Spain in 1991. To achieve this, a long process of historical research was carried out under the direction of Ignacio Fernández Vial, the designer and builder of the ship. To design the shape of the ship and define its characteristics, an extensive study was made based on documents from the 16th century, chronicles and iconography of that time. This documentation made it possible to accurately reproduce the main dimensions, spars, sails and equipment of the original ship.

By the way, Pieter Breugel the Elder already drew detailed ship prints in the 16th century, including the 'Kraak' type of the 'Nao Victoria'.

The 'Nao Victoria' will moor in the Mercator dock and be open to the general public free of charge. As part of the theme “Discoveries at Sea”, you will also discover the history of Magellan and his journey around the world.
