Essentially a fully-rigged tallship, she has ‘mixed’ rigging: the foremast carries square sails whilst the main and mizzen masts are rigged with sails in a longitudinal direction. This provides an ability to sail closer to the wind – and faster! Built for the Belgian Government at the Ramage and Ferguson shipyard at Leith in Scotland, Mercator normally carried 15 sails with a total area of 1,600 m² and with favorable winds could exceed 13 knots.
